Review: Life as We Know It

There is nothing wrong with a charming romantic comedy, especially when it stars to A-list celebrities. But at the end of the film when the characters live happily ever after with the choices they have made, it's usually a bad sign when nobody cares.

Life as We Know It stars Katherine Heigel (Killers) as Holly- a newly single and mature, pasty-chef living in Atlanta. Her friend Alison, played by Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) sets her up with her husband's womanizing, best friend, Eric played by Josh Duhamel (Transformers 2), who goes by the name “Messer”. The date ends abruptly when “Messer” receives a booty call before the two leave for their first date, leaving them on bad terms with one another.

A few minutes into the film, Alison and her husband Peter (Hayes MacArthur- She's Out of My League) die in a tragic car accident which shocks Holly and “Messer” but not as much as the detail that their friends conveniently forgot to mention- they're both their first choice of legal guardians for their now orphaned daughter, Sophie.

Tears flowing and panic-stricken the two decided to put aside the differences from their horrible date and raise Sophie together. Unannounced visits from social services result in the funniest scenes in the film, too bad Sarah Burns (Going the Distance) who plays the awkward social worker Janine, only has a few moments to display her comedic talent. The most Duhamel brings to his character is his handsome looks and for Heigel, it's her ability to again play the stressed and over-worked female character and make it believable.

Life as We Know It is a romantic-comedy that brings more tears than laughs. Overall, it's not a film to feel sorry about missing.
