Why doesn't anyone love 'Phillip Morris?'

Jim Carrey's newest comedy, I Love You Phillip Morris trailer started to hit the web in early 2010 and was planned to be released in the Spring but it never happened. What happened to this anticipated new film and why did it never hit theaters? That is the question that has been causing debate in Hollywood.

The film focuses on Jim Carrey's character, Steven Russel who gets into a car accident that causes him to re-valuate his life. Jim realizes that he is no longer happy with his wife, Debbie played by Leslie Mann (Funny People). Jim comes to the conclusion that he is gay and begins to live a risky life of crime. His lifestyle eventually leads him to a state penitentiary where he meets his future lover, Phillip Morris played by Ewan McGregor (Angels and Demons).

I Love You Phillip Morris received national and international critical claim at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and was a blockbuster hit in the United Kingdom and Germany where it was released in March of this year. So why did U.S. Audiences not get to view this film? Krystal Clark, a blogger for screencare.com, claims that the films “controversial content” was the reason behind the delay in its debut. Stating that because the film dealt with gay characters that it had trouble finding a distributor to support the film in the U.S.

Another reason behind the films push back release dates could also be due to the competition that the movie was set to face if released in the spring such as the wide-released, horror-thriller, Nightmare on Elm Street.

In August, Roadside Attractions bought the film and announced in a press release that the film would be open for limited release on December 3rd of this year.
